A pothole is usually a base problem. Patch the base, not just the hole.
Dropping hot mix in a pothole and tamping it down is a short term fix. Water is still in the base, and the patch usually comes back out.
We cut back to solid pavement, remove the wet or failed material, rebuild the base where needed and compact new asphalt so the patch lasts.
