Repair

Why pavement cracks, and when a crack is more than a crack

Not every crack needs a repave. Learn what each type of crack tells you about the base underneath.

Cracks are the first sign something is happening in or under the pavement. What they look like tells you whether you need a quick seal or something bigger.

Thin, isolated cracks

Hairline cracks from heat and age are normal. Sealing them early keeps water out of the base, and it is one of the cheapest things you can do for your pavement.

Alligator cracking

A pattern of interconnected cracks that looks like reptile skin means the base is failing. Sealing will not fix it. The section usually needs to be cut out and rebuilt.

Edge cracks

Cracks near the edge often come from weak support or poor drainage at the edge of the pavement.

Sunken areas and potholes

Water has softened the base. Patching only the surface usually fails. The base needs to be repaired too.
